Painting outdated furniture is an inexpensive and creative way to add color to your space! We're sharing a colorful nightstand makeover using a new favorite chalk mineral paint called Dixie Belle Paint. Are you brave enough to paint your furniture in a bold hue?
Don't buy new nightstands, refinish and paint your old ones or find an inexpensive pair at a garage sale, thrift shop or estate sale!
Painting furniture has been the latest craze for the past five years.
I think it has become so popular over the years because it allows you to up-cycle and reuse the furniture pieces that you already own and transform them inexpensively into beautiful new pieces of furniture with just a little bit of paint!
Disclaimer: While Dixie Belle Paint provided the products to complete this labor of love, I supplied the elbow grease, rescued furniture, design concept and opinions! All of which reflect my own point of view, regardless of receiving free product. This post contains affiliate links to products I love and use every day. You can view our full disclosure here.
Case in point. I found a pair of Ethan Allen nightstands at an estate sale for $40. At $20 a nightstand, I couldn't pass them up.
They had dovetail construction and were in near perfect condition. The problem was... they were ugly and outdated (which is why I'm pretty sure the original owner let them walk for $40.)
The curvy trim and the spindly legs screamed "Hello, 80's!" but I was determined to bring them up to speed to the 3rd millennium with some bold color and a simple hardware change.

Which furniture paint is the best for DIY furniture projects? There are a lot of great options and I've just discovered another one!
If you enjoy color, you'll have no problem finding some gorgeous hues! I couldn't wait to try their Plum Crazy out on these out-of-date end tables.

After just two coats of paint they were covered in a gorgeous rich plum color. The paint was so easy to apply!
I waited 24 hours for the paint to dry and cure before applying the top coat. Dixie Belle Paint has a few top coat options.
I wanted a little bit of shine for these nightstands so I selected Clear Coat Satin Finish as the top coat. Friends honestly... the application was SUPER easy! But if you want a top coat that is stronger, I highly recommend Gator Hide which I've used on several painted furniture makeovers!
Dixie Belle Paint's Clear Coat is thicker than most top coats that I've tried.
You can apply it with a paint brush without the worry of having it run. It gave these nightstand an unbelievable finish and my paint brushes cleaned up so quickly! It really is fabulous stuff!
I had some dangling hardware leftover from another furniture project that I used for this colorful nightstand makeover.
Changing out the hardware is another inexpensive way to update a piece of furniture without breaking the bank.
If you have old hardware that you don't like, paint that existing hardware with Dixie Belle Paint. ;)
I think you'll really be surprised how it can easily change the look!

I had to click through and check out the paint, love that it's a chalk paint, no sanding. There are so many gorgeous colors! Peony, Colonel Mustard, Daisy, Bunker Hill Blue, just to choose a few. But the peacock has my name written all over it! Now to find a fun entry table piece to use it on! Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to try it!
