How To Add Amazing Texture To Furniture

There are several different painting techniques that you can use to add texture to furniture. You can layer chalk paint® to add texture to your furniture, add depth and texture by incorporating fabric into your furniture makeover, or you can give the appearance of texture by using stencils or textured wallpaper. 

Today, I want to show you how to use old wood scraps to help build a modern and cool texture to any flat paneled piece of furniture.

We're calling this furniture makeover, The Elizabeth Console. I started with this six drawer dresser. One, two, three, four.. okay yes, I know. There are only four drawers. That's why it was FREE! It was miss'n something... or two things. Without those two bottom drawers, both my brain and my heart were whispering, "repurpose".

Without too much effort we trimmed down the middle support, removed the bottom drawer brackets and filled in any holes or scuffs with wood filler. What was once a dresser would now become a console table with storage.

Those four drawers needed something. I thought it would be neat to give it this piece some texture. Naturally,  I dove head first into our wood scrap pile. Anytime I have a chance to empty something from this pile it puts a big old smile on my face.



Not only is re-purposing FREE but it also allows me to fit another car into our garage. ;) I made sure to grab wood with varying degrees of thicknesses so that the drawers would have some nice depth and texture.

Once we had our drawer measurements, we made our cuts and then layed the wood strips onto the floor to create our pattern.

We used a nail gun to secure the wood to the drawer fronts and then we took a little break. That was exhausting! Not. It was so easy! We did take a break though... I wanted a Dr. Pepper.  :)

We finished the drawer fronts with our custom mix of American Decor™ in Relic and Legacy, then sealed Ms. Elizabeth with a layer of Creme Wax. Bu-bye flat drawers! Hello, gorgeous deep gray with a little punch!
